Workshops for law firmsKeep the matter in the firm.
For partners, professional development and the lawyers who will use a tool on Monday. The session is built around a matter type you bring, and the rule for what may leave the file.
- Partners and the lawyers on the matter
- In person or remote
- Your precedents, your rule

A firm has matters, undertakings and a browser
The risk in a law firm is specific. An associate can put a clause, a name or a bundle into a tool in the time it takes to make coffee. A policy that sits in the intranet does not change that. The useful room has a partner who can forbid it, a lawyer who does the work, and the person who owns professional development or risk.
Collective Campus has done this work inside firms. Allens put lawyers through a one day coding concepts course in Melbourne and Sydney, then ran the Auctus legal accelerator with us. Mayer Brown's London office and Clifford Chance ran digital awareness for lawyers, including artificial intelligence and the client conversation. Simmons & Simmons ran a coding concepts programme for lawyers in London. The workshops further down are the programmes we run now. Book the one that matches the problem you have this quarter.
- Osborne Clarke and Maddocks used design thinking on a problem the firm already had. Clifford Chance did the same with its lawyers.
- Clayton Utz worked with clients and markets on how a client actually experiences the firm.
- Foot Anstey ran two short sessions on testing an idea before it hardened into a project.
- Mills Oakley ran a legal startup accelerator with us. King & Wood Mallesons asked us to tighten the criteria they use before a startup investment or partnership.
- Harneys ran digital webinars for lawyers across their offices, covering coding, blockchain and smart contracts.

What is in the way
Client information in a public tool
The undertaking says the document stays with the firm. The browser does not know that. Someone has to write the matter types that may touch an approved tool, and the ones that stay in the file.
A draft that sounds finished
The output reads like advice. The lawyer still has to know where it is wrong, and the partner still has to be the person who signs.
A programme that never meets a matter
An away day can produce a slide about legal technology. The practice group is back on the same matters on Monday. The session has to start from one of those matters.
Professional development that stops at the tool
Lawyers need to brief a developer, challenge an output, and know when not to use one. A tour of features does not do that.

AI governance
Write the rule for which matter types may touch an approved tool, who can grant an exception, and what a partner will actually sign. This is the leadership day, mapped to the frameworks your risk people already recognise.

AI training
Put the lawyers who touch those matters in a room and practise the rule on a workflow they already have. Allens and Simmons & Simmons started with coding concepts. The current need is the same standard of programme, aimed at the tool and the file.

Critical thinking
Practise catching a confident wrong answer before it reaches a client or a partner. The skill is judgment. The tool does not supply it.
Explore →
Design thinking
Osborne Clarke used this with senior associates. Maddocks used it with people and culture on recruitment and development. Clifford Chance used it on problems inside the firm. Bring the problem. The method lives on the design thinking page.

Customer experience
Clayton Utz ran this with clients and markets: the points where a client feels the firm, and the ones that cost trust. Use it when the issue is how a client experiences the firm.
Explore →
Lean startup and product sprint
Foot Anstey asked lawyers to test an idea before it became a project. Use this when the firm is about to fund a new service, a panel product or a tool, and nobody has checked whether a client wants it.
Explore →
Productivity
Fee earners lose the day to meetings and scattered tools, then stay late on the matter. This is the session for getting the hours back without dropping the work.
Explore →
AI design sprints
Mills Oakley explored new legal services through an accelerator. A sprint is the shorter version: a live service idea, a thin test, and a decision to stop or continue.

In the room
What the team should leave with
- One matter type the room will use as the example, with the confidentiality constraint written down.
- The list of what may go into an approved tool, and the list that stays in the file.
- The partner who can add an exception, and the date the lists will be reviewed.
- The cohort of lawyers who will practise the rule, and which workshop they are booked into.

Questions from this kind of team
Who needs to be in the room?
A partner who can say what is forbidden, lawyers who do the work, and the person who owns professional development or risk. A room of innovation staff on their own will write a rule nobody on a matter will follow.
Can we use a live matter type?
Yes. Bring the matter type and the rule you already have, including anything a client has forbidden. That is the brief.
Is this the coding course Allens and Simmons & Simmons ran?
Those were one day coding concepts programmes, so lawyers could talk to clients and developers about how software actually works. Say if that is still the gap. Most firms now also need the governance rule and the judgment around a tool. We will tell you which day you are buying.
In person or remote?
Both. Clifford Chance ran digital awareness across offices. Osborne Clarke ran design thinking as a virtual workshop. Harneys ran webinars for lawyers in more than one office. We will match the format to who has to be there.

Financial services
For risk, learning and the people on the desk. Bring one workflow, the customer data it touches, and the person who is allowed to approve a tool.

Government
For the executive who owns a service, the team who runs it, and the person who answers for information. Bring one resident service and the rule you already have.
Explore →
Healthcare
For clinical governance, the operators, and the people who want a tool in the building. Bring one workflow and the information that must not leave the record.
Explore →
Real estate
For asset, leasing and the people who brief the board. Bring one portfolio problem and the information in the lease file that a tool should not see.

Tell us the workflow and who can say no.
Name the team, the constraint, and whether you want the room or a remote session. We will tell you which workshop fits.
